The Science Behind PRP Hair Restoration

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has revolutionized the treatment of hair loss, offering a natural, non-surgical alternative to hair transplants for many patients. But how exactly does injecting your own blood into your scalp stimulate hair growth?

What are Platelets?

Your blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Platelets are primarily known for their role in clotting blood when you get a cut. However, they are also packed with hundreds of specialized proteins called Growth Factors.

When you get injured, platelets rush to the site and release these growth factors to signal your body to start repairing tissue, growing new blood vessels, and regenerating skin.

How PRP Works for Hair Loss

In cases of Androgenetic Alopecia (male or female pattern baldness), hair follicles progressively shrink (miniaturize) and the growth phase of the hair cycle shortens. Eventually, the follicle becomes dormant.

During a PRP session at Healthfusion:

  1. We draw a small amount of your blood.
  2. We spin it in a specialized centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets—creating plasma that has 3 to 5 times the normal platelet concentration.
  3. We carefully inject this "liquid gold" directly into the areas of your scalp experiencing thinning.

The massive influx of growth factors (like PDGF, VEGF, and EGF) "wakes up" dormant hair follicles. It stimulates the stem cells in the follicle microenvironment, extends the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, and increases blood supply to the follicle.

Who is the Ideal Candidate?

PRP is incredibly effective, but it is not a magic cure for everyone. It works best for:

  • Patients in the early to middle stages of thinning.
  • Those with active but weakened hair follicles (it cannot grow hair on a completely bald scalp where follicles are dead).
  • Women experiencing diffuse hair thinning.

At Healthfusion, we combine PRP with targeted medical therapy and sometimes Ayurvedic scalp treatments (like Shirodhara) to maximize blood flow and reduce stress-induced shedding, ensuring the best possible outcome for your hair restoration journey.
