Pigmentation Treatment in Pune: Melasma vs Sun Spots, and What Actually Works

Pigmentation is one of the most common reasons people visit a dermatologist in Pune, and one of the most commonly mistreated. Many patients arrive at our Kharadi clinic after months of trying creams, facials or even lasers, only to find the patches are darker than before.

The reason is simple: pigmentation is not one condition. Melasma, sun spots, acne marks and neck darkening look similar in the mirror, but they have different causes and need different treatment. Treating them all the same way is why so many people see no improvement.

This guide explains the main types, what actually works for each, and how to protect your results. If you have already read our top skin brightening treatments article, think of this as the step before it: working out which treatment is right for your skin.

The Main Types of Pigmentation

  • Melasma: Symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose or jawline. It is more common in women and is linked to hormones, sun, heat and genetics.
  • Sun spots (solar lentigines) and tanning: Well-defined brown spots on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands and forearms, along with overall uneven tan.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark marks left behind after acne, eczema, insect bites, waxing burns or injury. Very common in Indian skin.
  • Acanthosis nigricans: Velvety darkening of the neck, underarms, groin or knuckles. It is often linked to insulin resistance, weight gain, PCOS or diabetes.
  • Lip and underarm darkening: Can be caused by friction, shaving, certain products, smoking, allergies or hormonal factors.
  • Freckles and birthmarks: Some are harmless and need no treatment; others respond well to specific lasers.

A dermatologist can usually tell these apart by examination, sometimes using a dermatoscope or a Wood's lamp to judge how deep the pigment sits. Depth matters: pigment in the upper layer of skin responds faster than pigment that sits deeper.

Why Melasma Keeps Coming Back

Melasma is the pigmentation patients find most frustrating, because it often returns after treatment. There are clear reasons:

  • Hormones: Pregnancy, oral contraceptives and hormonal changes can trigger or worsen it.
  • Sun and visible light: Ultraviolet rays darken melasma, but so can visible light, including strong daylight. Ordinary sunscreens do not block visible light well.
  • Heat: Cooking over a hot stove, hot yoga and long commutes in the sun can all aggravate it.
  • Irritation: Harsh scrubs, strong home remedies such as lemon juice, and aggressive procedures inflame the skin and make melasma darker.

The honest truth is that melasma is controlled rather than cured. With the right plan, most patients see a significant improvement. Keeping it light requires long-term sun protection and, often, maintenance treatment.

Treatment Options, and Which Ones Suit Which Type

1. Prescription creams. For melasma and PIH, dermatologist-prescribed creams are usually the foundation. Some of the most effective formulations contain ingredients that must be used for a limited time under medical supervision. Using them unsupervised for months can thin the skin and cause other problems, so they should never be bought on a friend's recommendation.

2. Chemical peels. Medical peels, such as mandelic, glycolic, lactic or combination peels, remove pigmented surface cells and improve tone. For Indian skin, the choice of acid and strength matters a great deal. Our peel treatments are selected according to your skin type.

3. Laser treatment. Lasers such as Q-switched Nd:YAG are effective for many sun spots, freckles and some types of pigmentation. For melasma, lasers must be used cautiously, at gentle settings, and usually alongside creams. Aggressive laser treatment can make melasma worse in brown skin, causing rebound darkening. This is one of the most important reasons to have pigmentation diagnosed before booking a laser package. See our laser depigmentation page for details.

4. Oral treatment. In selected cases of stubborn melasma, a dermatologist may prescribe oral medicine after checking that it is safe for you.

5. Treating the root cause. For acanthosis nigricans, managing weight, insulin resistance and blood sugar is part of the treatment. For PIH, controlling the acne that causes the marks comes first.

The Ayurveda and Dermatology Approach

In Ayurveda, pigmentation is associated with aggravated Pitta dosha and impurity of the blood (Rakta). Ayurvedic management can include cooling herbal applications (lepa), dietary changes, and detoxifying therapies such as Virechana where appropriate.

At Healthfusion, our fusion pigmentation treatment combines dermatology procedures with Ayurvedic support in one coordinated plan. This is particularly useful for patients whose pigmentation worsens with stress, heat or digestive issues.

What Affects the Cost of Pigmentation Treatment in Pune

Patients often ask for a single price, but pigmentation treatment is priced by the plan, not the procedure. The main factors are:

  • The type and depth of pigmentation
  • The size of the area being treated
  • Which treatments are needed (creams alone, peels, laser or a combination)
  • The number of sessions required
  • Whether maintenance sessions will be needed afterwards

At Healthfusion, the consultation is ₹500. You receive a written treatment plan with the expected number of sessions before you commit to anything. We do not sell packages under pressure. Be cautious of clinics that quote a fixed "pigmentation package" without examining your skin first.

How to Keep Your Results

  • Sunscreen every day, indoors and outdoors, reapplied if you are out in the sun. For melasma, a tinted sunscreen offers better protection against visible light.
  • Physical protection: A cap, umbrella or scarf when you are outdoors in the middle of the day.
  • Be gentle: No harsh scrubs, lemon, baking soda or bleaching products.
  • Do not pick: Picking pimples leaves marks that can last for months.
  • Follow up: Maintenance visits catch early darkening before it becomes a problem again.

FAQs

Can melasma be cured permanently?
Melasma can be lightened significantly and kept under control, but it tends to come back with sun exposure, heat and hormonal changes. Long-term sun protection and maintenance treatment are part of managing it.

Is laser the best treatment for pigmentation?
It depends on the type. Lasers work well for some sun spots and certain pigmentation, but aggressive laser treatment can make melasma worse in Indian skin. A dermatologist should diagnose the type of pigmentation before recommending laser.

How much does pigmentation treatment cost in Pune?
Cost depends on the type and depth of pigmentation, the area treated, the treatment used and the number of sessions needed. At Healthfusion, the consultation is ₹500 and you receive a written plan with the expected number of sessions before you commit.

Why is the skin on my neck and underarms dark?
Velvety darkening of the neck, underarms or groin is often acanthosis nigricans, which is commonly linked to insulin resistance, weight gain, PCOS or diabetes. It is worth getting checked, because treating the underlying cause is part of treating the pigmentation.
